Dolphin Diver Alison Komlos on Podium at 2011 Canadian Jr Nationals
 |
This past July Dolphins Dive Club team member Alison Komlos of West Vancouver traveled with 8 other divers on Kostya's National Team to compete at the 2011 Canadian Jr Diving Nationals in Pointe Claire, Quebec. This was Alison's first year at Nationals where she was in the 11 and under age group - Alison was just 9 when she competed at Nationals!
At Nationals, Alison has achieved what few divers do by placing 11th in the country in her first time out! She placed 11th on 3m after a dive list shake-up which forced dozens of divers, including Alison, to compete dives they had not planned to compete. She finished her meet with an amazing final dive, a back one and a half somersault in the pike |

position, an extremely difficult dive for a 9 year old, which was added to her competitive list at the last moment! A superb performance from a terrific athlete!
Alison earned her right to compete at Nationals following her banner 2011 competitive year which included being crowned BC Provincial Champion at both the Winter (1m) and Summer (3m) Provincials.
Alison is coached by Kostya Karibyan of the North Shore Dolphins Dive Club at our home pool in West Vancouver. Kostya is assisted by Stuart Malcolm, Soraya Mazhari, Allegra Friesen and Maia Robinson as well as various guest coaches.
Congratulations to Alison for being one of Canada’s top finishers at the 2011 Nationals!

Dolphins "Fab Four" Return from 2011 Canadian Jr Nationals (Montreal, Que July 6-10)
A big congratulations to Alison, Nicholas, Sam and Rebecca who joined 200 of Canada's best age group divers to compete in this year's Canadian Jr Nationals held in Point-Claire, Quebec. To compete at Jr Nationals, a diver must obtain a qualifying score at two qualifier meets at least one of which must be a Group 1 meet. BC holds only one Group 1 meet per year (the Sting held in Victoria in March) and usually two Group 2 qualifiers which are the BC Winter and Summer Provincial Championships. This is the third straight year the Dolphins have had representation at Nationals and this year was our largest contingent ever - a trend we definitely want to continue! Now for the details (youngest to oldest)...
Alison is in her first year of D age and qualified to compete on both 1m and 3m boards. She earned our top Dolphin placement for her 3m finish scoring 215.2 which put her on the podium at 11th place - well done Alison! Alison scored 198.6 on 1m for 17th place.
Nick is a second year D age diver and this was his second year at Nationals. He also competed on both 1m and 3m the latter board he qualified on, after only competing Tier 1 on it for 5 months. Nick scored 195.95 to finish 16th on 1m and 174.05 to finish 19th on 3m.
Sam is in his first year of C age and this was his first year at Nationals. He amazed all of us by qualifying on tower after only 2 months training tower - an amazing achievement! He also competed on both 1m and 3m making him our only Dolphin to compete all three boards. Sam dove well in a huge and very competitive field scoring 197.4 to finish 33rd on 1m, 252.9 to finish 23 on 3m and 218.05 to finish 20th on tower - the higher the better for Sam!
Rebecca is in her second year of C age and this was also her first year at Nationals where she competed on the 1m board. Becky really poured on the steam late in the year to earn her National spot in an amazing end to her regular competitive season! Rebecca scored 232.25 to place 28th on 1m.
Congratulations also goes to our sister team, Kostya's Fraser Valley Divers: Dani, Kailee, Kurt, Joel and Julia who also competed at this year's Nationals.
Our divers, parents and coach had a fun time together at this amazing meet and represented our club well among Canada's best divers. The NS Dolphins Board, our Club, Coaches and Divers are very proud of our 2011 National Team! Now it's time for summer holidays to really start for these 4 athletes who have definitely earned a vacation!

Four teenagers from the North Shore Dolphin Dive Club have qualified to compete in the Canadian Jr. National Diving Championships in Quebec in July. Alison Komlos, Rebecca Underdown, Nick Nepomuceno and Sam Braun each earned their place at the nationals by achieving top scores not once, but twice, at provincial level competitions. Komlos and Nepomuceno each qualified on two boards, one and three metres, surpassing the required scores on each board of 190 for the 1 m and 200 for the 3m. Underdown will compete on the 1 m, readily achieving more than the required 245 pts for her age category. Braun pulled off an amazing three qualifications, with scores topping the requisite 230 on 1 m, 240 on 3 m and 225 on tower. Team members consistently achieve podium placement thanks to their own determination and to their coach Kostya Karibyan who is assisted by Stuart Malcolm and Soraya Mazhari and YanYang who coaches tower in Vancouver. The club also offers a Learn to Dive program.

BC Summer Provincials - Victoria (May 27-29, 2011)
First off, a big congratulations to Isabella and Ellie for competing in their 1st Tier 1 Summer Provincials. Well done girls! We're proud of you!
Sam started Friday with a bang, getting his 2nd Tower (C Group) qualification. On Saturday the heat was on with Rebecca and Sam (both C Group) needing 2nd qualification scores in 1m and 3m respectively which they both got.
Kaelyn also did very well on 1m (C Group) Saturday posting a personal best and Nationals qualifying score of 245.30 to garner 5th place.
Ellie bagged the Bronze and Isabella came in 4th on 1m (E Group).
Saturday was also highlighted by Nick winning the 1m Gold medal (D Group) and Alison bagging the 3m Gold (D Group), both winning the title of BC Provincial Champion.
On Sunday the pressure was on Nick to get his 2nd qualifying score on 3m (D Group) which he did in spades with a Bronze medal and a score of 243.15. Asia dove 1m (D Group) and impressed the crowd when she ripped a couple of good dives. Alison dove 1m (D Group) getting a Silver with a score just 1 point from Gold. Sam also dove 1m (C Group) coming in 6th.
Congrats to the 2011 BC Summer Provincial Team: Isabella, Ellie, Asia, Alison, Nicholas, Sam, Kaelyn and Rebecca. We are proud of all of you and how you represented our club at this meet.

Alberta Summer Provincials (May 20-22)
Edmonton was the place to be for the Alberta Summer Provincials this year! It was a big meet with teams from Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, New Foundland, Saskatoon and of course Kostya's Fraser Valley and North Shore Dolphins. From the Dolphins Kostya brought Sam, Rebecca and Nick.
Sam was up first on Friday and started the meet off with a bang with a National qualifying score of 226.25 in his first ever tower competition. Sam has been training on tower for about 2 months so this is remarkable for a C age diver - well done Sam. On 1m he placed 2nd and on 3m he placed 4th, both of which with National qualifying scores.
Nick was next diving 3m on Friday finishing 8th with a score short of National qualifying. On Saturday Nick competed 1m and placed 5th with a National qualifying score of 212.35.
Rebecca dove Sunday on 1m and knocked it out of the park with her first National qualifying score of 253.6 - well done Becky.
Next weekend, Nick, Sam and Rebecca will all be trying for their second required National scores (Nick 3m, Becky 1m and Sam both 3m and tower).
Congratulations to all three of our divers competing in Edmonton. Kostya, your other coaches and the Dolphins Board are proud of all three of you and how hard you train. Keep working toward your goals and your hard work will pay off. Next up, BC Summer Provincials (May 27-29).

NS Dolphins Divers Qualify To Compete at the 2011 Canadian Jr Nationals (March 20, 2011)
Congratulations to Alison, Nicholas and Sam who Kostya has coached to qualifications for competing at the 2011 Canadian Jr Nationals to be held this summer in Montreal Quebec. To qualify a diver must obtain National qualifying scores at 2 sanctioned meets at least one of which must be a Group 1 qualifier. BC has 1 Group 1 meet in the year (the Marc LePoole Speedo Sting) which was held in Victoria BC March 17-20th. Alison qualified on both the 1m and 3m boards at the BC Winter Provincials and again at the Sting and is now fully qualified to compete both boards at Nationals. Nicholas and Sam both qualified for 1m at BC Winter Provincials and again at the Sting and are both fully qualified for 1m. Nick also qualified for 3m at the Sting and hopes to be fully qualified to compete 3m as well. Sam was mere points off for 3m at both meets (keep at it Sam).
We are proud of all our divers and very happy for Alison, Nick and Sam for their achievements - well done divers and well done Kostya!!
NS Dolphins at the 2011 Marc LePoole Speedo Sting, Victoria BC (March 18-20)
Six of our North Shore Dolphins spent their Spring Break with divers from Canada, USA, Japan and New Zealand to compete in the 2011 Speedo Sting in Victoria BC. The Sting is BC's only Group 1 National Qualifier and our Province's biggest meet of the year. This year, Kostya brought the following divers from North Shore: Alison, Asia, Kaelyn, Nicholas, Rebecca and Sam.
D Group: Asia, Alison and NIcholas:
Asia did great at her first Sting diving 1m in a large group and finishing a solid 9th. She dove her reverse dive in competition for the first time and dove it well! Many more Stings to come.
Alison was very solid in a large and competitive field on both 1m and 3m making podium on both boards. She finished 5th on 1m and 4th on 3m and achieved National qualifying scores on each board. Alison is now fully qualified to compete both 1m and 3m at the 2011 Canadian Nationals to be held in Montreal later this year - congratulations Alison!
Nicholas also dove well finishing in the bronze medal spot on 1m and 4th on 3m (just 0.1 out of third place). Nick got National qualifying scores on both boards and is now fully qualified for Nationals on 1m and half qualified on 3m.
C Group: Kaelyn, Rebecca and Sam:
Kaelyn dove with grace and height putting in a solid performance placing 10th on both 1m and 3m boards.
Rebecca also dove with her usual beautiful form and placed 11th on 1m.
Sam was precise and dove well (especially considering the time change) and he placed 8th on both the 1m and 3m boards. Sam achieved a National qualifying score on 1m and is also now fully qualified for the Nationals on 1m.
Congratulations to all our Sting divers on your solid performances. Congratulations also go to Kostya's Fraser Valley divers many of whom also qualified to dive at this year's Nationals - well done all!
BC Winter Provincials (Feb 18, 19, 20)

A very impressive showing from our T 2 divers - well done!
In Tier 1 we had Rebecca on 1m plus Kaelyn, Sam, Nick and Alison diving on both 1m and 3m boards. On 1m Kaelyn dove tight in C age and placed 3rd for the bronze medal with a score less than 1 point below National qualifying. Rebecca also in C age dove well placing 7th. Alison was a rock star and brought home the gold in 1m D age, with our first National qualifying score of 2011. NIck also qualified for Nationals on 1m D age and finished in the bronze medal position. On 3m Nick dove his first ever Tier 1, 3m event and placed 3rd with a score that was 4 points under National qualifying. In C age, Sam dove solid in a tough field of very competitive divers finishing in 6th place and less than 3 points off Nationals qualifying. Alison was a double Nationals qualifier with solid diving and took the silver medal in 3m D age. Kaelyn dove well to finish in 5th place in 3m C age. Good job Tier 1!
A special thanks to Head Coach Kostya and Assistant Coach Stuart for all your hard work and superb coaching with our divers over the past months and especially on the weekend. Our divers are so fortunate to have such fabulous coaches working with them!!
We are very proud of our Dolphin divers and how well you all did at this meet. Keep up the hard work and keep striving for those National scores and podium finishes. Most importantly keep having lots of good healthy fun diving with your friends!! Congratulations to all our 2011 BC Winter Provincial competitors!
Langley Tier 2 Meet (January 29, 2011)
Congratulations to each Dolphin diver who competed for North Shore in the January 29 Tier 2 meet at Walnut Grove pool in Langley! The entire Dolphins competitive team plus some of our class divers participated and what a day it was for Dolphins blue on the podium. Many first time competitors participated from our club and there were lots of smiles, awards, podium finishes plus 9 first place and 8 second place ribbons earned by Dolphins.
In Tier 3 there was a huge list of entries especially in Girls E group on 1m which had 17 competitors and our Dolphins were all in the top 10 as follows: Isabella 10th; Nicole 8th; Maeve 7th; Ellie 5th; Makayla 4th - well done all!! Also in Tier 3 but D age on 1m, Makena L took 9th, Jordana 6th, Sophie 5th, Nora 4th and it was a Dolphin race to the finish with Isabelle taking second place and Fiona taking first - now that's teamwork. Still in Tier 3 on 1m but up to C group Sarah placed a strong 5th and Morgan won first place. In girls Tier 3 on 3m our Dolphins did excellent with Asia and Morgan both taking second place in D age and C age respectively. Now for boys Tier 3 where our Dolphins Bjorn and Jessie took silver and gold respectively in both 3m and 1m in boys C age - well done guys and good teamwork! We are really impressed with how well all our Tier 3 divers performed but best of all was seeing the big smiles and fun our divers had at this meet.
Moving to Tier 2 Asia did so well at her first dive meet taking first place in D age on the 1m board. Also in D age Tier 2 but on the 3m board Nick took first place - well done. In C age on 3m Rebecca placed 4th. Our senior competitive diver Andrea was looking sharp in B age and finished 2nd on 3m - well done Tier 2.
There was a limited Tier 1 event in the afternoon where CADA divers could choose 1 event to participate in. Alison, in D age, chose the 3m and dove very well to finish in first place. Nick dove 1m D age and also placed first. Kaelyn dove 3m in C age and finished a strong second in a big field of competitors. Sam dove 1m very well and finished in first place C age with a strong score. Rebecca on 1m in C group was impressive, bagging good marks on most of her dives and finished in a strong 4th place. Andrea dove very well in her first B age 1m event finishing 2nd. It was great to see our Tier 1 divers at this event cheering on their teammates and getting into the competitive season again.
We are proud of every Dolphin competitor and how well you represented the North Shore at this meet. A big thank you goes to Fraser Valley Dive Club and BC Diving for putting on such a super event. An even bigger thank you goes to Head Coach Kostya and Dolphin's coaches Soraya and Stuart who made attendance at this meet possible for our divers.

Polar Bear Classic (Winnipeg, January 14-16, 2011)

BC Diving Christmas Camp (December 28-30, 2010)
Three days of fun, hard work, amazing presentations and excellent diving describes this year's BC Diving Christmas camp. The Dolphins sent their largest contingent ever with Bethany, Humphry, Sophie, Jessie, Asia, Alison, Nick, Sam and Kaelyn all attending. The camp was extremely well run with the kids working on their goals in groups and rotating between coaches each day.
There were excellent lectures by Olympic Bronze Medalist Lynn Kanuka (nee Williams - 1984 3000m running), former Olympian, multiple Pan Am and Commonwealth Games medalist and Olympic Judge Bev Boys as well as an amazing dry land workout with gymnastics coach Rusty and Keri. Superb coaching was provided by Boxi Liang, Yan Yang, Kostya Karibyan, Fu Qiang, Grant Brehaut, Brian Anderson, Alana Prygiel, Lorin Jones, Ashley Impellezzere and Stuart Malcolm (we hope we didn't miss any coaches) and Bev was on deck all three days as well.
We saw lots of smiles and heard lots of cheers each day and the divers got to watch instant playback on the Tivo with their coaches. Highlights from our divers include Kaelyn doing a front two and a half on 3m, Sam's amazing forward flying ("Superman") dives off 5m, Bethany and Humphry's excellent front dives on 1m, Jesse's back 1.5s on the dry board and jumps off the 7.5m tower, Asia's front one and a half on 1m, Alison's and Nick's front doubles on 1m and Sophie's amazing inward dive and jump off 5m.
There were super dry land workouts including trampoline, dry boards, handstands, flips, pike-ups and conditioning and these divers had great enthusiasm for all of it. Most amazing was watching the senior competitive divers from around the region do inspiring dives. Voted best fun again this year was ending camp in the bubbles.
A big
Thank You to BC Diving for all the efforts it took to put this well run camp on and a special thanks to Elaine Cox for the lovely Christmas cupcakes on day 3.
