Answers:

Q1. Does my child need to swim well to be able to dive?
A1. In order to register in our recreational classes, your child must be comfortable swimming in deep water so they can swim out of the diving tank.

Q2. Does my child need to compete at Dive Meets?
A2. Pre-Competitive and Competitive divers will have the opportunity to participate in dive meets.  Please let your coach know if your child would like to compete at one of our 2-3 local diving competitions. These fun dive meets are usually located at Walnut Grove Aquatic Centre in Langley or at the White Rock pool in South Surrey. Competitive Team divers are expected to compete at competitions identified by the Head Coach.

Q3. Does my child need prior diving experience?
A3. No – Our Recreational program is designed to teach each individual the basics of diving.

Q4. Does my child need gymnastics experience?
A4. No, however we find that gymnasts, cheerleaders, dancers and circus kids tend to pick up diving more quickly.

Q5. Does my child need to buy a uniform?
A5. Children can wear whatever bathing suit they are comfortable in.  However, we do recommend that girls wear one-piece suits.  Good quality suits can be purchased at Team Aquatics in North Vancouver and if you mention you are a Dolphins member, you will receive 10% off the regular price.

Q6. What are the Fees?
A6. Fees vary depending on length of session and number of classes.

Q7. What if I need financial assistance?
A7. Please contact KidSport BC, Athletics For Kids or Canadian Tire Jumpstart at the websites listed below to apply for financial assistance:

Q8. At what age can my child start diving?
A8. The minimum age to register is 6 years old.  Parents are the best judge of whether a younger diver will enjoy the program or not so we welcome you to come watch a diving class before registering (but please do not interrupt the coaches during a class.)

Q9. How does my child join the Competitive Dive Team?
A9. Admission to this full-year program is at the invitation of the Head Coach. Divers must participate in at least one session of our recreational or pre-competitive classes prior to being invited to join the dive team.

Q10. Where do you practice?
A10. The North Shore Dolphins Dive Club offers a comprehensive range of springboard diving programs for children, teens and adults at the West Vancouver Aquatic Centre, Ron Andrews Pool in North Vancouver and our competitive team also trains weekly at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre.

Q11. What days are the lessons/practices?
A11. Current class schedule can be found on the Dive Programs page.

Q12. How long do you practice?
A12. Our recreational classes are generally 1 hour long and competitive classes are generally 3 hours long  (1 hour of dry land & 2 hours of diving)

Q13. What is the Fitness Tax Credit?
A13. The Canada Revenue Agency allows a claim of up to $1000 per child for the fees paid in the calendar year that relate to the cost of registering your or your spouse’s or common-law partner’s child in a prescribed program of physical activity.  The child must be under 16 years of age at December 31st to qualify for the tax credit.

Specific inquiries can be directed to Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281.

Information about the proposed tax credit for organizations and clubs providing programs and potential receipts can be found at:

Q14. When will I receive my Fitness Tax Receipt?
A14. Canada Revenue Agency Fitness Tax Receipts are available on the North Shore Dolphins registration system on an ongoing basis. If you need a tax receipt and paid via our registration system, follow this link to our registration page and once online request a receipt from the system.

Fitness Tax Receipts will be emailed to you at the time of registration in our programs, and you can re-print them by logging into your account from our Registration Page, and clicking on “re-send receipt.”

If you registered for a West Vancouver Community Centre dive program, please call (604)925-7270 for a fitness tax receipt.

Q15. What if my child is sick?
A15. Our Head Coach requests parents keep their child home if they are not feeling well.  Also, if they become sick at practice they should let their coach know they are not well and go to their parent (if the parent is not watching diving then they can ask our Head Coach for his cell phone and call their parent to pick them up). If a diver is injured during practice, they should inform our Head Coach who will let their parent know (and of course, take them to a lifeguard, if medical attention is required).

Q16. What is the withdrawal policy?
A16. To withdraw your child from one of our programs, written notice must be given to the Registrar, at northshoredolphinsdiveclub@gmail.com. Verbal notification and non-attendance are not considered withdrawal. A refund will only be provided with a medical doctor’s note. Refunds are calculated on the number of classes remaining in a session minus the Club’s Administration Fee. The Administration Fee associated with refunds or any cheque request is $25.
